Congratulations to our New Honorary Member, Miguel A. Caínzos Fernández, MD, PhD, FACS (Hon), MAMSE!

One century ago, Lord Moyniham, MD, FRCS, CB, KCMG, wrote that “our bacteriological experiment may be conducted with one or two intentions: the exclusion of all organisms from the wound or the destruction of all organisms reaching the wound.”

Today in 2022, a century later, I believe that as surgeons we need to make all the effort we can, both at a technical level and in the antimicrobial fight against microorganisms, to prevent the development of surgical site infection. This is because it is still the greatest enemy of, and major concern in surgery.

As I see it, the Surgical Infection Society (SIS) is ideally placed in the surgical arena to reach this end. I will thus collaborate with the SIS, firstly, through the education of those surgeons who are interested in the field of surgical infections, and secondly, by attempting to develop new tools that will enable surgeons to win this final battle.
